* John's recap (recapitulation : 요점의 되풀이)

Hey Jake. Where were you last night? Hong Kil-Dong and I went out to a restaurant to have a dinner. We thought you showed up and we want you to pay the bill. That's why.

Now after, after eating, we were trying to decide "Who's gonna pay?" And finally Gil-dong said "I got it, I got it."

And he went up to a register and they asked him "Will that be cash or charge, sir?" He said "Well, I've got this new credit card, I was issued a new credit card. I hope it's valid. I'll charge it, please. "

And when he gave them the card, they tried to run it through their machine and realized. "Oh, oh, it doesn't work. It's already maxed out." "So surprising. It's a new card."

You know, but he's got that hobby of shopping, shopping, shopping and so finally he ended up giving him a debit card and paid the bill and out the door we went.

So Jake. Next time it's on you.

+ Love is a game that two can play and both win.

◎ News
① Court ends Alaska offshore drilling plan (법정이 알래스카 연안 채굴 계획을 끝내다)
The very thing that's cause for concern with regard to walrus and other species here in the Arctic is what's made drilling in these waters more attractive to industry: less sea ice.

* cause/reason for concern: 걱정의 원인/이유
* regard: 여기다, 간주하다 (with regard to: ~에 관해)
* walrus: 바다표범 (cf. seal)

♠ Let's travel together to the Arctic. Be careful! We might be standing on very thin ice or no ice at all. The problem is there is less sea ice. Well, this is not good news for walrus and other species that live there. That is cause for concern, it's something they worry about. However less sea ice is a bonus, it's a positive point for industry. For companies that wish to drill through that ice down into the earth to probably pull out gas or oil. I have only one question. If you put sea ice in your mouth, is it salty?

② Ten High-Tech Weapons to Repel Pirates
Modern pirates are creating a market for modern pirate repellents. The owners of ships that ply the waters near Somalia are looking at lasers, electric fences, water cannons and high-intensity sound.

* repellent: 물리치는 것
- water/shark/pirate repellent
- insect/mosquito/bug etc repellent (→ a substance that keeps insects away)
- ply through snow/homework... means always so difficult to push and struggle to get through.
- a three-ply rope 세가닥의 밧줄 / cf. pliers 펜치
* high-intensity: 고강도

♠ To be a pirate is a job that has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. Well, we know that even these days in Somalia area, modern-day pirates are there to rob and steal and to take over ships. Well, the owners of ships are concerned about that. They are looking for modern ways to stop these pirates. They are looking at high technology weapons and items of self-defence. Jake, I like the old style, not modern style. Old style is swords, baseball bats, empty whiskey bottles... that would keep the pirates away. (J: OK, You go and fight and I'll just sit back... okay?) A good sword fight on a ship deck... wow, it's like in the movies.

You'll expect that the temperature will be a higher degrees but you know, with the wind blowing it really brings down the temperature. The windchill factors kind of feel like maybe, oh, maybe about minus five or six against your body. But that's just because of the wind. Don't be fooled by the thermometer, though. Thermometer might tell you it's zero or one but it's a little colder than that.

* Let's jump into GMP lifestyle's tips

In english the word "weatherization" means to protect a building from natural elements such as sunlight, wind to reduce the energy consumption. Not this word also called "weather proofing" in British english

Now in the United States there is organization program called "the Weatherization Assistance Program" , it helps low-income families to make some alterations on a house, to reduce some energy consumption and the cost of using energy

* John's recap (recapitulation : 요점의 되풀이)

You know, I woke up early to listen to KBS radio so that I can hear the weather report today.

Which was O.K. by me but the announcer said that there would be actually below zero which was surprising for this time of the year.

You will expect the temperature will be a higher degees but you know, with the wind blowing at really brings down the temperature, wind chill factor's ,a kind of feel like maybe, oh maybe about minus five or six against your body.

③ terms (계약) 조건
- the conditions, the minor details of a contract
④ be good for (얼마동안) 유효한

(4월 20일 까지), before April 20th. (4월 19일 까지) d) continual (something that is repeated), continuous (to keep up without stopping)

♠ Business is business and business is the business of making money. Whenever we talk about business, of course, parties come together and talk about the terms of a contract. And of course they talk about not only what you're gonna do, what I'm gonna do, and who's responsible for what. Of course we talk about the contract deadline. Typically a good business contract might be good for several years and always you must be very very careful, read the fine print, otherwise you might get a contract that you don't like, but it'll be too late.

2. SE
° You beat yourself up for no reason.
- to beat yourself up (to put yourself down): to ridicule yourself or to say that you're not good, you're not qualified, to blame yourself too much for something

J: What's he look like? You got a picture?
- What's: 구어체에선 What does를 줄여서도.
R: Yeah.
J: Well, let me see. There he is. That tooth grew in.
- Baby teeth fall out and adult/permanent teeth grow in.
R: I hope so. It's an old picture.
J: See? You're a good influence. He plays an instrument. He's got a happy face. He's got teeth. You beat yourself up for no reason.
- eg. Late night TV is not a good influence on young children.

3. PE (Mad, sung by Ne-Yo)
° Talkin' just turns into screamin'.

+ I prefer to lose.

4. TPL (Do you know much about + N? ~
① Do you know much about this city/baseball/her family/computers/psychology/modern history근대사/the Middle East/financial investments?
A: Do you know much about modern history?
B: A little. Why do you ask?
A: I have to write a paper for history class.
B: Then why don't you ask Rick? He knows more than me.

② flunk, 낙제하다.
- to give someone low marks on a test so that they fail it (= fail)
- eg. If you flunk this subject, there is no way you'll graduate this year.

단어복습 :  get a promotion 승진하다, get laid off 해고하다, postpone 연기하다 reschedule 스케줄을 조정하다  agenda 의제 debate 토론하다

step 1

get a contract   계약을 따내다

How many people in your party?

terms 조건  terms and conditions 조건

be good for ~  ~ 동안 유효하다  Drive license is good for 7 years

step 2

breach of contract  계약위반

negotiation  협상

temporary contract  가계약

More words

step 3

This contract is good for 2 years  이 계약은 2년간 유효합니다.

The terms are under negotiation

The verbal contract is not valid

* Let's jump into GMP lifestyle's tips

at one's discretion

Yes, another expression! "at the risk of someone", risk means danger of course. problem.

네 다른 표현 "at the risk of someone", 리스크는 위험, 문제를 의미한다

So "at the risk of someone" means that you take the responsibility yourself, no one take the responsibility.

그래서 "at the risk of someone"은 네가 책임을 지고 아무도 책임을 지지 않는다는 뜻이다.

by April twentieth  4월20일 까지 포함

Also in english two words "continual" and "continuous"  are a little bit different, aren't they?

"Continual" means something that is repeated, repeated currency but "continuous" means to keep up with stopping

Business is business. Business is making the money.

Whenever we talk about business, of course parties come together and talk about terms of contract.

Of course they talk about not only what you gonna do, what I gonna do, who's responsible for what, of course we talk about the contract dead line.

Typically good business contract might be good for several years, always you must be very very careful.

Read the fine print otherwise you might get a contract you don't like but it will be too late.

News
① Global Warming: Heat Could Kill Drought-stressed Trees Fast

There's a lot of fairly basic stuff that scientists don't really know about trees.
The warmer temperatures made the trees significantly more vulnerable to drought.

* fairly 꽤, 아주
* significantly 확연히, 두드러지게
* vulnerable 취약한
* drought 가뭄

♠ Is this good news or bad news? But our scientists are still learning. In fact, in today news, we find out they are learning about trees. Basic things, simple things about trees they're still learning. For example, when there is a season of not enough rain during a period of drought, trees can be injured, they are weak and they can be injured by this lack of water and of course, the warmer temperatures really don't help them either. I'm glad our scientists are still learning.

② 'Brown Fat' Could Help Adults Keep Slim
Some studies coming out today find that one kind of fat tissue could actually help people lose weight. It's called brown fat. And the studies say it burns off calories quickly unlike ordinary white fat that stores up calories.

* study 연구, 논문, 서재
* fat 지방
* tissue 조직, 화장지
* burn off 불태워 없애다
- used often when talking about losing weight, burn off calories/fat/weight/energy/etc
* unlike ~와 달리

♠ More medical dietary news! It turns out that our scientists tell us we have two kinds of fat in our body, brown fat and white fat. Obviously the white fat is not the fat that you like, it's the kind that stores calories for a long time. However, this newly discovered brown fat is actually pretty good for you. That kind of brown fat burns calories very very quickly and might actually help you to lose weight. I've done my own research, I've discovered that on my body, I have only brown fat.

* Let's jump into GMP lifestyle's tips

In a business meeting, if someone wnats to present an idea or give a suggestion, that idea is usually called "motion"

So someone can make a motion

Now if we agree with the motion, you can say "Yes, yes, yes, I second the motion"

Now in a meeting very often when you want to agree or disagree, yes or no, you might use these words "aye or nay" instead of "yes or no"

If you don't decide that the your opinion ,you can't decide your own opinion, you're fused to make any comment, then it's called "abstain, abstain from saying anything"

③ sales figure 판매 수치
- figure: a) 그림 (figure skating) b) 사람 (a legendary figure in basketball) c) 숫자
④ make a strategy 전략을 세우다

♠ It's that time of the year when everyone in the office is getting ready for the annual report. The fiscal figures that we have to deal with every year on costs and sales are very high. And it could do a result in either some people getting laid off or some people getting promotions. Hopefully the sales figures will be really high. That's what the boss wants to see. He's already made a strategy for us how to improve certain areas of our work force and he's got alternative choices for us. The most important of them are "Work hard!" or "Get fired!".
